Detailed selection criteria for the Climate Index:
  • Ethical criteria for inclusion
  • Specific criteria for being a "Green Utility"
  • Specific criteria for waste management companies
  • Some notable exclusions to the climate index
  • Annual update criteria
The index includes every company that meets our ethical criteria and weighs them by market cap
We don't try to pick winners and losers, but instead let the broader market decide. For example, the climate index includes all solar companies traded on the NYSE. The big ones, get a big share. The small ones get a proportionally small share.

We make a couple of adjustments to ensure no company is too over- or under-weighted. There is a floor of 0.01% allocation per company and a ceiling of 5.00%.
We update the Climate Index annually

Add new companies

More and more companies are building climate solutions. We add new IPOs and those who now meet ethical criteria. Companies must meet our ethical criteria, have IPO'd more than 6 months before.

Remove companies that no longer meet criteria

Companies change. They open up new product lines. They release new information.
We re-screen and remove any companies that no longer meet our ethical criteria for inclusion.

Incorporate your feedback

Our goal for all of our portfolios to always be a work in progress.
Your feedback is crucial to helping us improve the climate index, year over year.
And use our votes to push the Climate Index companies to do better on climate, faster
Just because a company is in the climate index, doesn't mean it can't decarbonize faster.

Even companies who build decarbonization technologies can decarbonize both their operations and supply chain faster. Our theory of change rests upon pressuring the companies who can change to switch to renewable energy, overhaul their vehicle fleets to all electric (or green hydrogen), and eliminate fossil fuel-derived plastics from their products to do so, and drive demand for these products across the economy.

Leveraging the power of our proxy votes and our collective voices, we aim to push every climate index company to reach carbon neutral/negative as quickly as possible.
