Climate advocacy is the term for activities that concerned citizens undertake to support action on climate change.

It involves working with government officials, businesses, and other organizations to try and create a sustainable future.

Climate advocacy can take many different forms, from writing letters to the editor and participating in rallies to investing in clean, renewable, and sustainable energy.

Understanding Climate Change

Climate change refers to a change in the average conditions — such as rainfall and temperature — in a specific region over a long period of time.

For instance, much of the United States was covered in glaciers 20,000 years ago. Today, the United States has a warmer climate and fewer glaciers.

Global climate change is the average long-term change that occurs over the entire Earth. These include changes in precipitation and warming temperatures, as well as the Earth's warming effects, such as:

  • Shrinking mountain glaciers

  • Ice is melting more rapidly than usual in Antarctica, Greenland, and the Arctic

  • Rising sea levels

  • Changes in plant and flower blooming times.

Earth's climate has been evolving — even before humans came into the picture. However, scientists have discovered unusual changes recently.

For instance, the Earth's average temperature has been rapidly increasing more than expected over the past 150 years.

Further, the burning of fossil fuels adds more and more carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. As a result, it builds up like a blanket that traps heat worldwide and disrupts the Earth's climate system.

Over 97% of climate scientists recognized that this is happening and is primarily human-caused.

Goals of Climate Advocacy

Goals_of_Climate_Advocacy

The goals of climate advocacy are to:

  • Strengthen the commitments the USA made in the Paris Agreement

  • Educate the public about what is happening with the climate and why it matters

  • Transition from the use of oil, coal, and natural gas to clean, safe, and renewable energy and energy efficiency

  • Encourage individuals, businesses, and governments to take action to slow down and reverse climate change.

  • Support international climate negotiations to make sure they result in strong agreements that set the world on a path to a safe and sustainable future

These goals are important because they provide a framework for what is needed to do to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
