From LEDs, to HVAC automation, to dynamic glass, to high efficiency heat pumps, to high-performance glass, to insulation, to net-zero buildings and building retrofits, to smart thermostats, and efficient water distribution, see below for the full list of every building and energy efficiency stock in Carbon Collective's Climate Index.
Worldwide, buildings account for 32% of energy use.
We use a significant amount of energy to keep our homes and buildings lit and at an optimal temperature. And with rising urbanization and the severe shortage of housing, we’re going to need a lot more buildings over the next 10-20 years.
25% - 60% of energy used in heating/cooling gets wasted.
Buildings, especially old buildings, can be quite wasteful. An ideal building acts like a sealed box, keeping the internal temperature fairly constant, regardless of external temperature. Most buildings today were constructed in the last century and are pretty drafty boxes. Their often outdated heating and cooling systems have to work a lot harder to keep the inside at the right temperature.
Energy efficiency is profitable and key to solving climate change.
Contemporary energy efficiency technology, from better insulation, to high performance windows, to heat pumps, can keep our buildings just as comfortable using just a fraction of the energy. Older buildings can benefit from energy efficiency retrofits (the Empire State Building cut its energy use by 40% and paid for itself) and newer buildings can be constructed with the most advanced materials.
Part of the challenge of solving climate change will be the impact of transitioning fossil-fuel burning appliances, like furnaces, to all-electric. Each unit that transitions will put far more demand on the electrical grid, so we need them to run as efficiently as possible.
Here are the publicly traded companies that are making it happen. This list represents all of the building and clean energy efficiency stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange (except for penny stocks whose share prices were less than $0.50 in our last update).
If you are a Carbon Collective member, you own all of these companies through the Climate Index.
